Evening Sun
Medium: Watercolor Paint on Canvas Size: 30.4 cm x 30.4 cm December 2016 Exhibition Text: For my piece, I was inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe and her pieces, Blue, Black, and Grey and Series I - No. I. I was also inspired by the sun and its colors when it starts to set in the evening, hence the title of the piece. |
Artist Inspiration:
For my artist inspiration, I was inspired by the work of Georgia O'Keeffe, specifically her two pieces: Blue, Black, and Grey and Series I- No. I. I liked the way O'Keeffe blended her paints in her artwork, and the shadows that can be seen within the pieces. I wanted to use her style in my piece, but instead of using oils like she did for these two pieces, I used watercolors.

Cultural Inspiration:
For my cultural inspiration, I was mostly inspired by sunsets, specifically the ones in California. Even though a sunset in California doesn't lok any different than a sunset somewhere else, California is like a second home to me since I visit my family there every two years for a month or so. I always enjoyed looking at the sunset and the colors it gave off when it began to set.

Experimentation:
For my experimentation, I didn't really do much other than trying to see what colors looked best when blended. I blended certain yellows with reds, and certain reds with other reds, etc.
Process:
1.) First I painted the whole canvas with yellows.
2.) Next, I took a yellow and blended it with red to make an orange. I then took this orange and painted it on the yellow, but using light strokes. 3.) Next, I did the same thing as step 2 but this time made the orange more dark. 4.) Then, I continued to repeat steps 2 and 3 but continued to make the color darker until it was a light red. 5.) I waited for the canvas to dry. and repeated steps 2-4, making layer after layer so the watercolor paint could show up. 6.) I then finished my piece and let it dry. |

Sketches:
|
For my sketches, I used colors that are normally associated with a sunset, so I used the following colors: yellow, red, orange, and brown. Each of my sketches were different, for the forth and first two sketches were made with colored pencils, to make the blending easier for me to see. My third sketch was made with Fresh paint. The blending isn't as well as the sketches made with colored pencils, but I liked the colors that were used. My last sketch was made with pens and a highlighter. I used a red and orange pen for the thinner lines, and a yellow highlighter for the thicker yellow lines. I really liked the colors that were used in my last sketch, but liked the way my first sketch looked. So I decided to use the first sketch, but use the colors from my last sketch.
