Title: The Rich Want More
Size: 17.5 x 12.5 cm Medium: Ink on Paper December 2015 Exhibition Text: For my Dry Point, I wanted to use Pop Art to show the obsession of greed. In my piece, the wealthy woman is seen crying tears of joy at the sight of diamonds. My piece was influenced by the work of Roy Lichtenstein. |
Artistic Inspiration:
Process:
|
1.) After finishing my sketches and choosing the one I wanted to do, I grabbed an etching tool, masking tape, and a plastic plate to start my dry point.
2.) I used the masking tape to tape the plastic plate onto my sketch, and began to etch. 3.) After I finished etching, I peeled off the tape, placed a piece of paper in a bucket of water for eight minutes, and I began to spread the ink onto my plate. 4.) After placing the ink on my plate, I scraped off the excess ink so I only had ink in the places that I etched. 5.) Once the timer went out, I took the wet paper out of the bucket to let it dry on a towel, but not dry all the way through. 6.) Once the paper was dampened, I slowly placed my etched plate (with the ink) onto the dampened paper and placed it into the etching press and rolled it through. It surprisingly only took me one try. 7.) I let it sit on the rack to dry for a few hours and it was completed. |
Sketches:
|
For my sketches I wanted to draw an image that either fitted into my original theme (greed), or draw an image that had a new theme. My first sketch had the new theme superstitions, my second sketch was sadness (charcoal), my third sketch was greed, my forth sketch was beauty (pencil/color pencil), and my fifth sketch was also greed. |
Meaning Behind My Piece:
The meaning behind my piece is greed, and how even though someone may be the richest person alive, they will never be satisfied with what they have and want more. The woman in my dry point has pearls around her neck to better show that she's wealthy, but the only thing that brings her happiness is the sight of money or jewelry, which is why I replaced the pupils with diamonds in her eyes, and why she's happily crying.
Reflection:
I wish I could've done a better job on it, but due to problems with time management, I wasn't able to do more. Looking back on this project I should've drawn my sketches sooner, but it took me a while since I had trouble coming up with ideas as to what I wanted to do. I was somewhat happy with the piece, I had trouble getting the lips the right size since one moment they looked too small, then the next time they were too big. I also had trouble drawing the hair, but I felt happy with it afterwards. It would've been nice to do another theme for my dry point since I didn't really know what to draw next for greed, but I was fine in the end.
